Most places where science gets discussed require a ticket to get in. arXiv needs an endorsement from someone already inside. Journals want an institutional affiliation and a review process that can take a year before a stranger's idea sees daylight. Have a good idea and no credentials, and there's nowhere to put it.
History didn't wait for that ticket
Newton wrote the Principia with no journal to referee it. Einstein published his 1905 papers — special relativity included — while working as a patent clerk, no lab, no institutional backing. Galileo built his own telescope and pointed it at the sky without anyone's endorsement. None of them would clear a modern gatekeeping committee on résumé alone.
Gatekeeping has a body count
Giordano Bruno was burned at the stake in 1600 for cosmology the Church called heresy. Nobody gets burned for ideas anymore, but the instinct — reject the outsider, protect the institution — didn't go anywhere. It just traded the robe for a peer-review form. Somewhere along the way, credentials became a proxy for correctness, and we started rewarding the credential over the idea.
What Laymafy actually is
Laymafy isn't anti-academic. Anyone with a PhD is as welcome here as anyone without one. What it isn't is gatekept for them. No endorsement to collect, no affiliation to list, no committee deciding your idea is worth a slot. If you can explain it and defend it, you can publish it — and the community is the peer review, in public, after the fact instead of before it.
Why invite-only, then?
The one gate that does exist here isn't about who's allowed to have an idea — it's about keeping bots and spam off a platform that runs on trust. Every account gets 100 invites to hand out, so in practice the door is wide open to any human who wants in; the gate exists to keep out the ones that aren't.
The bar is different, not lower
Nothing here is exempt from being wrong. Post something sloppy and the comments will say so. The difference is that the conversation starts with the idea, not with whoever was allowed to have one.
